Don't worry...
we all have Common doggy problems...
are Why go to a Groomers?
Regular trips to a groomer helps keep a dog's coat and skin in a good condition, minimising knots and tangles and reduces the 'tumble weed' fluff which normally ends up in your home.
Professional groomers keep records about your dog's appearance, coat and skin condition, blemishes and health issues. These records can help spotlight any unusual changes from visit to visit.
Are all Groomers the same?
Did you realise that Grooming is an unlicensed service and there is no legislation requiring training?
Certified training is expensive and ensures high level skills. Certified Groomers will have chosen to train at their own expense in order to acquire the skill and knowledge about different breeds, safe handling of dogs and tools, first aid, dog health and well being, as well as animal welfare legislation. Grooming is a specialised occupation.
Are all Dog Grooming services the same?
Dog Groomers have entered their profession for a variety of reasons, some love specific breeds, some just love spending time with dogs and each groomer will provide different services according to their interests.
Dog groomers are akin to a skilled hairdresser crossed with an animal handler and each will add their own signature to the grooms they perform. Some will prefer clipping, some will love to scissor cut and some will use a mixture of both but each method takes skill and knowledge. Good groomers will use their experience to work with the owner and advise what will work for your specific dog.
Why a Teacher's Pet groom?
At Teacher's Pet I value getting to know your dog and their preferences in order to build a relationship with them. I also work with the owner to develop a suitable groom for each dog's lifestyle. 1 to 1 bespoke services take time, so my grooms may be longer than those you have experienced in other salons and their groom style may develop over several visits.
Dogs are bathed in high quality shampoos and conditioners and I prefer to use a shower head to wash (rather than a hydro bath) as I enjoy a 'hands on' massaging method. I also favour hand scissoring techniques, especially when styling legs and faces. I use clippers mainly for grooming same length areas such as backs and sides then style using scissors. I like to keep flexible enough to include walks if needed, comfort breaks and treats to make each visit as enjoyable for your dog as possible.

Are all dogs requirements the same?
Today's modern crosses can have coats which vary immensely.
Some breeds of dog may be well suited to clipping, whilst others have a coat which is best stripped, so not all dogs are equal.
Cockerpoos particularly can have an extremely light and fluffy coat which knots incredibly easily. Some may favour the Cocker Spaniel and have a straighter silky element, others may have a curlier more easily tangled coat. On paper they are the 'same' breed, but in reality one coat will be much trickier to brush out and be more prone to matting. This type of coat will make it far more time consuming to maintain than the other straighter varieties and needs regular grooms.
Short hair breeds will be less time consuming to look after, needing only regular brushing and a refreshing bath and blow dry. They will not mat and a good shedding at the groomer will help lessen the amount of hair left in the house.
Double coated breeds will benefit from deshedding and the use of high powered driers to help remove the thick undercoat together with a neatening of the feet and tail.
So every dog will need its own special groom suited to it's coat type and breed type.
Puppies...when should they come?
As soon as your puppy has had their last injection and has been given permission to venture out into the big, wide world, bring them along for their Puppy Introduction course. Just like a child's first experiences with the dentist or doctor, the more stress free the visits the more relaxed about returning they will be.
Special needs...
Visitors who need some extra TLC
Old, infirm and disabled dogs - I can supply mats and belly straps to help offer support for older dogs who may find standing for any length of time more challenging. I can also carry out or modify treatments and grooms so that they have time sitting or laying down.
Visually impaired dogs - I offer a free familiarisation session for dogs who are visually impaired, this give them time to have a safe exploration of the environment and equipment getting used to the any strange noises and smells.
Epileptic dogs - I am happy to work with epileptic dogs in conjunction with the owner's instructions.
Behavioural issues - not all dogs have had good experiences in life and as such may display behavioural issues from previous traumas. I am happy to work with owners and their dogs to minimise stress and help reduce trigger points, gradually working towards a full groom. However, please be aware that I am a lone groomer. If a dog displays excessive aggressive behaviour it may be more suitable to find a multi-groomer establishment.
